The standout feature here is Kodi, a media-focused application that has a cult following and thousands of users that contribute to building plugins that expand the feature set. The system uses an Intel Braswell processor that is more powerful than the ARM-based processors found in many of the other systems in our roundup. Two gigabytes of system memory allow users to run more software applications simultaneously, and it also improves many of the core functions, such as DLNA multimedia distribution and file transfer performance.

Over the last two years, the company has pushed the boundaries of commodity enterprise hardware with low-cost, mass manufactured systems that support features previously reserved to boutique builders of custom storage systems. The TAS falls at the other end of the pricing spectrum, but the underlying software is nearly identical. QNAP's enterprise push has trickled enterprise features down to its low-cost Intel-based systems, but even some of the standard features are not available yet for the new ARM platform.

I will be using it to store my documents and then for multimedia use too. So if you want the NAS to double as media player the Asustor is only the option out of those two, though how well XBMC runs is hard to gauge as it's pretty new to these platforms.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking a separate player might be better to take the work off the NAS, but I suppose the transcoding on the Synology is just the same and its what they are designed to do. Thanks again. File system level encryption is of no use to media streaming. The transcoding will only kick in on the mobile apps, dont know if it will activate using the synology provided DLNA media server with associated profiles maybe synology can say. I know this company very well, to put it into perspective, Syno is like Porsche, they have created a product DSM and have over the years perfected it, its still the same DSM OS but with each update free btw it gets better, support gets better, for techies with unix and Linux knowledge it is epic, for noobs, DSM is simple to use, and there are loads of pretty good knowledge base docs to support it.

I am also a personal fan of Asus and have alot of their products, self built computers and servers with Asus motherboards, routers, screens, allot of stuff. There customer support when you contact them is very good as well. As a big fan of both companies, I would recommend Synology over Asustor. Last edited: Dec 5, Regarding nexts "So if you want the NAS to double as media player the Asustor is only the option out of those two" I disagree.

Like Next mentioned, music or video streaming is epic from Synology. You dont need to have it connected directly to a screen to avail of media functions.

Again, Recommending Synology. For extreme data security you can create an iscsi disk and encrypt it using truecrypt. Thanks for both replies, really helpful. Whilst doing a bit of research I also found Drobo, any thoughts on this? Also, a lot of people are recommending Plex and the Drobo supports this.

Is Plex worth having? Thank you. I have asustor asT for 2 months already and am very satisfied with it.Purchasing network-attached storage is considered an investment for some people.
